John was educated at St. Paul’s School, London and Cambridge University where he read Modern Languages and then Law. He subsequently obtained an LL.M in International Law.
From 1976 to 1979, John trained at the Law firm of Norton Rose, Botterell and Roche in London and accepted an offer to join Michael A. Karageorgis S.A. in Piraeus as legal adviser specializing in hull and machinery and P&I claims and charter-party disputes.
During this time, John was involved in a number of major insurance claims including the detention and subsequent CTL of the MT. “Wondrous” in Bandar Abbas during the Iran-Iraq conflict and the CTL of the cruiseship “Navarino” in Skaramanga drydock. The experience gained during a decade working for the Karageorgis Group was to prove invaluable. In addition to handling a plethora of insurance claims and charter-party disputes, John gained experience in tanker management as director of Global Tankers from 1983 till 1989.
In 1990, John was head-hunted by the Manley Hopkins Group in Piraeus. After acting as managing director of the well-known ship-brokerage firm of P. Wigham-Richardson (Hellas) till 1993, John assumed responsibility for the marketing of the Manley Group’s activities to the Greek shipping communities of Piraeus and London. These activities ranged from the core business of average adjusting (Manley Hopkins Son and Cookes Ltd) to S&P, shipyard representation, marine communications, ship management, ship newbuilding contract finance and supervision.
In 1997, following the demise of the firm of Manley Hopkins Son & Cookes, John approached the company’s two senior adjusters, Paul Cook and Michael Docherty with a view to setting up Independent Average Adjusters. As its name implies, the company is wholly owned by its partners and all adjustments are prepared, printed and issued at its own premises in Athens.
When not attending meetings with clients, John is responsible for the administration and all marketing activities of the company. This includes regular trips abroad to meet underwriters and brokers and visits to existing and potential clients closer to home. Within the last year he has been promoting the concept of seminars to be held in shipping offices on matters of marine insurance and claims handling.More Personnel
